Study on the Weekends

The professional courses meet on eight alternate weekends per trimester with each instructional weekend including  full days on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The four full-time clinical experiences, totaling 36 weeks, are scheduled Monday through Friday.

The weekend format allows students to continue part-time employment, to maintain family responsibilities, and to pursue other interests. Students are cautioned, however, that long work hours are generally incompatible with success in the program, which does require extensive study time. Our past experience has been that students who work more than 20 hours per week on a regular basis had difficulty in meeting the rigorous demands of this program.

Physical Therapy Pro Bono Clinic

Founded in 2019, the Dominican University Physical Therapy Clinic was established to provide rehabilitation services to the Dominican University community at no cost. Under direct supervision from faculty members of the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program, graduate students organize and staff the clinic, as they pursue a Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

Driven by the Dominican University creed “learning with a purpose, driven by an outcome: your success”, our goal is to provide evidence based, high-level, manual therapy-based rehabilitation services to all members of the community, while fostering an environment where students are able to enhance and promote their skills. Students develop leadership, communication and physical therapy skills, while providing a health-care service to the DC community. Members of the DC community have access to a team of student clinicians who, under the supervision of licensed Doctors of Physical Therapy, complete and develop comprehensive evaluations, assessments, and treatment plans.

The clinic is only available to current students, faculty and staff.  Please click on this link to schedule an appointment.  Please note, you will need your portal credentials to make an appointment.

Clinical Education

Clinical Education is a significant and critical component of the professional physical therapy curriculum. It allows students to observe and be mentored by expert clinicians working in their respective specialized clinical settings. Dominican University has developed more than 300 clinical relationships with a wide variety of carefully selected well respected local, regional, and national facilities.

The physical therapy curriculum provides four full-time clinical experiences throughout the 10 trimesters, totaling 36 weeks. During these four blocks of clinical practice, each student will have experiences with patients/clients across the lifespan in a variety of settings that encompass a range of conditions from acute to chronic. The student’s clinical education experiences will provide them with the entry-level knowledge and skills they need in the general practice of physical therapy.
